RAW : SHALTMIRA
Here's my very very long, but real and honest story how I made it to LA. Hope it will inspire and help for other young artists.
I arrived to Los Angeles on May 27th, Who I knew here? 1 person. So what I started to do when I came here? The only thing I know - to draw. Had no planned exhibitions in U.S., just thought will plan it after I'll have my new canvas series ready. So while being here, enjoying local sushi and numerous existential crisis, I worked on my new canvas series and smoked my rolled tobacco cigs outside the house at night looking at the sky pierced by palm trees and only the lines of If— by Rudyard Kipling, a poem was sounding in my head :
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
As they say, I never thought it will be easy, but never thought it will be that hard (this must be a bad Coldplay song, isn't?) I left everything I had in Lithuania. I gave away lots of my stuff to friends, drove other shit to my mom's place, left the cool apartment I rented, I left my boyfriend of 3 years, I gave my dog (!) to my best friend to look after, I abandoned my position as an exhibition curator at Devilstone festival, I denied participation in Night of Culture, where I supposed to perform, well lots of stuff I left behind me to come to La.
I was already planning my exhibitions tour in U.S. in 2016, but falling in love with a guy who lives in La obviously fastened my plans. (bla bla, yeah, he's the best).
So I came here. All expectations were crushed. Haha. Just a good reminder that universe is always laughing at our little plans. All this adaptation to the new environment took me a while. I never knew what gonna happen next day. New place, new people, new boyfriend, new living together shit, new "I don't know how to do things I need to do", "Where to buy a marker" situation. Fuck it. I was unable to leave home alone for first weeks. Felt trapped. Depressed. There was so much information around I felt paralyzed. And the only thing that helped me to function was my art. I kept on drawing almost everyday. And taking pictures of myself drawing. This is what I do, ok. Just surviving. Everyday was a fight.
AND 4 days ago, on July 2nd, I GOT AN EMAIL.
From Ryan, LA//Denver Showcase Director of an international arts organization called RAW:natural born artists. RAW is an indie arts organization for artists, by artists. They focus on spotlighting underground talent within the first 10 years of their career to the public. Every other month they hand-select and showcase 40 artists in film, fashion, music, visual art, photography, performing art etc. They currently showcase artists in over 60 cities across the U.S, Australia, Canada and the U.K. ...including, of course, LA.
So, he said he found my work on Instagram then made his way to my website and was blown away. Something something and "Your body of work suggest the kind of versatility I like represented in our intermedia showcases. I would love to give my audience the pleasure of experiencing your vision and I'd be thrilled to see it in person myself. <...> featuring your art in our collaborative showcase at Exchange LA during the LA Artwalk on [8/13] We are currently featuring 30 local artists and would love you have you involved as well. Our mission is to provide artists with tools, resources and exposure. We do this online here at www.RAWartists.organd offline through the events."
THAT WAS IT. It made me tremendously happy. Nobody helped me. I just came here and kept on doing what I do. And now I'll be participating in this huge event and showing my new canvas. BAM. All insecurities, doubts, hard times, heartaches, pain, depression anxiety, stress - everything what you experience when you get out of your safe zone, comfort zone, everything totally pays off in the end. This is what I've learned. Most important thing - NEVER BE AFRAID. Lots of time I told myself : "I don't know how yet, but everything gonna be allright."
This show means a life to me. I would love to see some familiar faces there. I'll also do the performance at the opening. I work even harder now to make this unforgettable experience.
Ok, and at the end, some people def will say, what's the catch? What are we buying?
I can help with spending your money, for sure. So what they asked me is to sell 20 tickets to this event. Each is 15$. And you can buy this ticket by clicking "Buy the ticket for the Artist" herehttp://www.rawartists.org/shaltmira . So each artist can participate for free in this event but brings some people to the show, so system is pretty cool. I don't wanna just say "Hey, buy ticket to my show", so I will say it this way : BUY TICKET TO MY SHOW AND GET LIMITED (only 20 in this world), A3 size, HAND SIGNED ART PRINT CALLED "WANNABE" (https://instagram.com/p/w3f8-Qx82x/) , which you can pick up at the show, OR DON'T EVEN GO TO THE SHOW, but buy a ticket, and text me "Hey, I really want that print, but I live in Uganda and can't come to your show. Can I buy a ticket to the show, won't go and get the print? " And I'll be like "Hey, yeah, totally. What's your address, I'm sending it to you whenever you are next day, cheers.". And that's it. So ok. Kind of tired of writing this longest post in my personal posts history.
My art academy teacher once said: "Maybe I will never understand what you are doing, but if you believe in it - keep on doing it."
I needed to go it alone in order to build up valuable life experience and maturity. As I search for freedom and independence, it is likely I will make mistakes on my way due to my reckless and impatient nature but this is all part of the journey.
Thanks for reading. And support.

Published in Lithuanian cultural magazine "Literatura ir menas", Nr.14. The article titled "Exhibition 'I' tests depression" and my artwork, who's originally bright pink painting on canvas, called 'Hanged', here. All goes well hand in hand. #sadly is all that comes to my head. Lithuanians are masters of making things to look worse than they are. Of course, the magazine probably doesn't have enough money for colored illustrations. But by reducing colors they only increase depression, haha. All is better than it's represented to us.

LIETUVOS MENININKAI APIE MITO CANOVA / LITHUANIAN ARTIST TALK ABOUT MITO CANOVA
For the first time in Lithuania an exhibition “Tabula Rasa” of a world known Italian artist Mito Canova will be opened on Wednesday, January 9th, 5pm in “Titanic” (Maironis st. 3, Vilnius). Exhibition will feature never before seen works of art created during his stay in Lithuania. A 7 hour experience will contain a performance, during which well known sterile gallery space will turn into unseen scene, offering an experience of transformative power of new media and technology.
By s(t)imulating all human senses Mito Canova explores the perception of reality. Therefore the cognitive process into which a spectator gets drawn in operates in two phases: firstly, artworks are being perceived visually, audibly, by touch, smell, sometimes even taste; secondly – by an emotional associative orientation of fundamental mental structures. Therefore all Canova's works are not only open to the viewer, they also require
his full involvement.

LAIMA KREIVYTĖ APIE SHALTMIROS PARODĄ PAMĖNKALNIO GALERIJOJE
2012m. Rugpjūtis
2012m. Rugpjūtis
Shaltmiros manifestai

How do you imagine yourself after five years? What would be you ideal scenario?
„I don’t mind going nowhere as long as it’s an interesting path.” I don’t have a specific five year plan, but there is a direction. The most important thing is to do something that gives me pleasure and what I am interested in the most. For me it’s art. „If you want something you’ve never had before, you’ve got to do something you’ve never done before.” That’s why there is a ever continuous search.
